Special Interest Course Groupings

We have listed below some electives you might wish to consider, depending on your interests. Please note that those students preparing for graduate school, regardless of the area they wish to enter, should pay careful attention to the section "Psychology for Students Interested in Graduate School" below. We feel that it is very important to consult with your advisor when you are choosing your electives.

Psychology for Students Wishing to Work with a Bachelor's Degree

The required core and foundation courses for Psychology majors must be completed.

There are no professional certification or formal degree options. However, the department does offer a variety of courses in areas of special interest. You cannot take all the courses listed for each area--please consult with your advisor about the courses that will help you best achieve your goals.

  4. The required core and foundation courses for Psychology majors must be completed.

    Electives from courses from the 300 through 500 level must be used to complete the requirements of 34 hours of Psychology courses. We recommend that many of these hours be chosen from additional courses in the three Foundations areas. Doing so will better prepare students for graduate training. We also recommend that you consider enrolling in one or more of these courses:

    It is also strongly recommended that you take courses in your particular interest area and that you get involved in research when possible.

    * PSY 490, Preparation for Graduate School is an invaluable source for reality testing. Students who are thinking about graduate school should take the course in the fall of their junior years.

PSY 525 Motivation and Emotions. 3(3-0) F.
Prerequisite: PSY 121 and 3 additional hours of psychology. Psychological and physiological motives, needs, drives and instinctual mechanisms; emotional effects of these upon the organism.

PSY 529 Psychological Tests and Measurements. 3(3-0) F.
Prerequisite: PSY 121 and 200 or equivalent. Theory and technique underlying measurement of human traits and abilities. Critical analysis of intellectual, achievement, interest and personality tests, including their development, application and potential abuses.
