Psychology 

Admission Requirements

Applications are accepted for the fall semester only. All application materials must be submitted by March 1 for early admission consideration. Late applications will be considered if vacancies are available until classes begin in the fall semester (mid August).

All applicants must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.25 in the major. Coursework in basic statistics and laboratory research methods is required. Coursework in the areas of psychological testing, I/O and social psychology are recommended. Students lacking required courses may be considered for admission, but will be expected to complete deficits without graduate credit being awarded for those courses.

A combined score of 1000 on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) with not less than 470 on either Verbal or Quantitative sections is required. Applicants not meeting all required criteria may be considered for admission to the program based upon compensating factors.

Applicants are required to complete the Graduate College application form which must be accompanied by a $35.00 fee.

Applicants must also complete the Psychology of Department application form.

In addition, three letters of recommendation and official undergraduate transcripts are required. In making admission decisions, the faculty considers evidence of academic and professional potential and the availability of departmental resources to meet the needs of the student.

Non-resident status

A student's residence status is determined at the time of admission according to the policy recommended by the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education and passed by the Board of Regents. Copies of this policy are available from the Office of Admissions and Records (417-836-5517).

Missouri State University is authorized under Federal Law to enroll non-immigrant alien students. International students making application to graduate study at Missouri State are required to submit the following:

  1. Verification of financial support in an amount determined by the university as stated in the application materials;
  2. Transcripts of all college work. The applicant must have completed all requirements of the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree in an accredited, licensed, or recognized college or university and have appropriate undergraduate training to pursue the graduate degree of the applicant's choice;

    AND, have an overall grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale overall, or at least a 2.75 grade point average on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 hours of academic course work;

    OR have a score of 475 or higher on either the verbal or quantitative section of the Graduate Record Examination, and a score of not less than 400 on the other section; OR,

  3. Standardized examination scores. Applicants are required to submit a score of at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score at or above the 50th percentile on the Listening Comprehension Section. Applicants to certain programs must submit GRE or GMAT scores. Please check the specific program admission requirements.
